the OC Weekly

So, i just read the article that the OC Weekly published about our May art show, “To The 5th Dimension” and forgive me if I am a little less than excited. They gave us this two sided, betray us with a kiss, description that is not very flattering or acurate for that matter. I guess I am happy though for the exposure, so in closing I’ll say this… thanks OC weekly  but no thanks!

read it here.

This post is for all of you out there that think they could never get into metal, seriously, I have been into 3 bands lately that shatter the preconcived notions that metal is too cheesy/corney or that it’s all just disonance and too masculine or even that musically it is overkill! Well to all non-believers I present to you my current metal favs!

1. Baroness - The Red Album: This is just all around great song writing. This album is polished! This album takes you everywhere you want it to, just when you think a song can’t get much better, BAM, it does! With this one think like Sabbath/Zeplin style metal but not nearly as corney and twice as complex (in a good way). I love this album! (my mom does too!)

Special Side Note: the lead singer, is an amazing artist and does all the bands artwork!

2. Torche - Meananderthal: Taking a page out of the Melvins book, Torche delivers an onslaught of indie/garage rock sounding metal that is simple enough at times to rock out to but is also complex and experimental. One thing I really love about this album is that there are times where it sounds so so heavy and dissonant but some how I never feel like it crosses the cheesy threshold into generic metal land. You will listen to this and fall in love with the way it takes you back to high school feelings of rocking out!

3. Russian Circles - This a newer band from chicago that i honestly don’t know much about but they have a really great vibe. at times they really cook like any metal band but most of the time they are creating aural soundscapes beautiful enough to liken the amazing sounds of Sigu Ros. Their self titled is really good and makes me excited for the new and interesting place that avant guard metal music will go.

So, now you know, keep an open mind to music, if it sounds good then it probably is!

Hibbleton Art Show

Thats right “we” (Timber!, Japanland, Metasaurus) “recently” (May 30th) had another art show! There was a really good turn out, thanks to all who came, it was great to see all of you. I was highly inspired/motivated by the whole show and I am already planning my next show, I would really like to expand my style and execution. I feel like I have so much stuff going on inside my head and I want everyone to see it so I am going to work my hardest for the next few months before school starts again to make some great stuff. Be ready at a moments notice!

There are a few galleries floating around so ill just post a few pics i liked and leave the rest to you.

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL CONTRIBUTORS TO THE “ZOOM’N: A SIGN OF HOPE” BOOK, you are all #1 in my book!

I Had to post about this…. (I was just introduced to this by Adam Burton) Improv Everywhere is an a comedy troupe That performs entertaining acts in everyday life on the streets. Started in 2001 by Charlie Todd & based in New York but now with world wide members. The whole idea started in response against Television as our main means of entertainment, so these guys decided to hit the streets to release us from the mind numbing idiot box. So, You could be sitting on a subway or at your sons little league game and all of the sudden 50 people show up, on a mission to make that game the best it can be. They will pull out all the stops, some will be playing devoted fans, some announcers on a portable jumbo-tron & even the good year blimp will make an appearance. It’s so RAD, and the craziest part is you could totally  see one of these acts happen, at…. youre, uh….. grandmas funeral, alright mabey not but anything is possible with Improv Everywhere!

Euro-sneak-peek

So, I just got back from a trip to europe and I am going to post picks of that soon but for now this will have to hold you over….

I visited this really old/cool museum in Oxford, England called the Pitt Rivers and their home page has an awesome virtual walkthrough. This museum was packed to the brim with everything from ancient masks to colonial battle ship models to full dinosaur skeletons to shrunken heads, the whole time I was in there I kept feeling like i was going to run into an old english explorer guy with a safari hat and an elephant riffle! It was cool, believe you me, and if you don’t, you can SEE for your self!

BONUS: +5 explorer points

Reading Rainbow

I recently dicovered this artist, BRIAN DETTMER, that chopps books up and turns them into sculptures. Pretty cool stuff, really makes the books come alive! I wonder what he could do with comics? and I also wonder if his teachers hated him!?

Watch out for…

“The Watchmen”. Now, I don’t like to read, shocking i know, but this book blows minds like Chernobyl! “The Watchmen” is the best graphic novel I have ever read, it could be called the “Moby Dick” of graphic novels. It has something for everyone, action, suspense, mystery, complex character studies, and a walking inkblot test. It has pretty much the same plot as The Incredibles by was created like 10 years earlier and is not a goofy Disney movie. If you sitting there reading this thinking that comic books are for kids, well that would be a gross generalization and you would be dead wrong! So If you care at all about award winning literature or higher levels of education or even completely life altering experiences, then you should probably do the whole human race a big favor and check out this book. It is comparable with Batman, The Shadow, Captain America, V for Vendetta but is way better. Go get It!

SPECIAL SIDE NOTE: Watchmen the movie comes out 03/06/09, directed by Zach Snyder(300). Check the screen grabs here!
